NCGPS 2010 Fall Event
Saturday, October 2
9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Richard Billow, Ph. D., ABPP, CGP:
Loving, Hating, and Knowing:
Working with Resistance, Rebellion, and Refusal
International House
UC Berkeley
Psychotherapy is about developing the capacity to tolerate d develop truth, which is limited, desired and feared. Emotional truths often are difficult to bear, much less to share with others, for they are rooted in our basic urges to love, hate, and know. Therapist and other members struggle to cope with and make sense of these urges, which define group process and meaning. How the therapist (along with group members) assesses and responds to the need for truth creates the phenomena of resistance, rebellion, and refusal.
Billow’s relational approach involves the group therapist as central in the action: eliciting, evaluating and responding to the truth needs of the various individuals and the group itself and detecting and modulating the impact of falsity. The Conference will include a "fishbowl" demonstration group, and a whole group experience.

The Group Therapy Salon
How long has it been since you've read a paper about group therapy?
How well are you acquainted with new papers about groups?
When was the last time that you've had a theoretical discussion about some issue in the group psychotherapy field?
The NCGPS is starting a new project: The Group Therapy Salon. The idea is to establish small groups (10-12 members each) that will meet monthly to read papers in group therapy and discuss theoretical issues about groups.
There are three Salons working right now: One in the South Bay, facilitate by Alice and Alan Sklar, One in San Franciso, facilitated by Barbara Elbl, and one in Sacramento/Davis, facilitated by Haim Weinberg.
The Palo Alto Salon meets at 8 PM on the first Monday of every month, and includes 9 members. There is a volunteer discussant for each reading followed by a leaderless discussion. You can contact Alice Sklar at a2sklar@aol.com or call (650) 961-3482, to find out the next reading or to get the address and directions.
The Sacramento/Davis Salon was the first one to open, and currently includes 10 members. It meets on the third Monday every month, 7:30-9:00Pm, alternating between Davis and Sacramento. If you are coming from this area please contact Haim Weinberg at haimw@group-psychotherapy.com or call 916-212-6424. |
